"Walk Lightly When The Jug Is Full "is a Kerry saying which I presume to mean do not squander your strength when you are at your peak fitness or something to that effect.The album is my North East punk folk voyage into Celtic tunings which I spent the covid years getting to grips with in North East Punk Folk mode of course..Producer Chris Barry and I recorded it in winter 2020 and spring 2021 .

THE SONGS

1/"tyrants of the open string" is about overcoming the awe I have for the likes of John Spillane and Andy Irvine and their open tuned instruments and the unfortunate encounter I had with Andy in the Workman's Club about 10 years ago connected with a query i had about weird tunings .I was told off by Andy but it was for the best in the end,I just got stuck into the playing and eventually i found my own way through the mire of learning something new .

2/"Sing what you know about " is about my dislike for the trad cover version ,especially "take her up to Monto" as sung in a Slane folk pub last November by two Meath lads or any Luke Kelly cover version or "Arthur MC Bride"

3/"Atlantic Coast Woman " is an instrumental piece dedicated to my great wife from the West of Ireland ,Sophie.

4/"Pregnancy Test Kit" is about my friend who would not want to be named.
She works in a pharmacy in Dundalk .The song is about the most popular item on sale there and a bit about the buyers themselves
and what goes on around the place .

5/"Dirty thoughts " is about the hell of being taught about sex by the Dominicans priests and the De La Salle Brothers .90 per cent of the De La gang left the order to get married after they had scarred our minds for good

6/"Clean White Shirt " is about a scene from the British movie "Lynn and Lucy" .A woman who works at the hair salon describes how she wears her dead sons ashes around her neck and how he was killed .

7/"Celibate Rifle Day " is a duet with David Keenan it's about the 'incel' online community ,the hive mentality and the nurturing of dangerous young minds.

8/"Crisis of Hope " was written during the pandemic it's about keeping the good side out .

9/"I can't breathe "is about the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis after his attempted arrest in 2020.

10/" A trillion ways " means the fight against triviality,vanity and the search for sanity .There's a line about the movie "The Treasure of the Sierra Madras"

11/"The Leper " is about going where you know you're not wanted .In my case my uncles house with my son and the threat of anarchy on the shiny sofas .Again it was written during the pandemic but it concerns isolation away from other people in the day to day.

12/"20 Silk Cut Blue" is dedicated to my Dad's mother Rose Lennon who liked smoking the cigarettes .

13/"Spit it Out"concerns the pitfalls of living in a terraced house and having to rap the same neighbours door at 3 am the odd time .

14/"Bonny Iris " is a ballad I wrote about a press ganged sailor whole comes back to find his love has become another man's wife and having to deal with that .There's a book called ''Jack Tarr'' about life at sea during the Press gang era the idea ,it may have come from that.

15/" The man who loved ABBA" is a true story about an ex boxer from Belfast .Johnny who battled with alcohol and eventually lost .A genuinely nice man when sober and a huge Abba fan.

16/" It's better to be alive" was done on a very out of tune piano which I was very fond of but my wife Sophie wanted rid of.Its a very dramatic song about a soldier who turns against the tyranny of his regiment and ends up getting shot for his troubles .

Absolutely love that deep concertina sound. And the range of expression that Cormac brings out through this instrument, well beyond the intentions of the designers or makers of these instruments. And, feel sorry for his poor bellows and reeds. He has to do a lot of personal repair on them. Cormac's album design and presentation are beautiful works of art as well.
